Practical activity based solutions for carers and people living with dementia
Creating Conversations Limited is a social enterprise launched by participatory arts charity, Artlink Central, to market specialist creative products for the care and dementia sectors. As a social enterprise, all profit generated by Creating Conversations Limited supports the broader charitable work of Artlink Central with groups in the community experiencing physical or mental illness, disability or disadvantage.
Artlink Central has worked with older people and those with a diagnosis of dementia for over 20 years, mainly in NHS care settings. In 2014 it was recognised that we could take the expertise we had developed over those twenty-plus years and apply it to developing products that would greatly increase the social impact of our work and would deliver real benefits for users.
A core group of Artlink Central staff, artists and dementia advisors have developed our first product, the Gardening Activities Kit, over the last 2 years. The kit is designed for use by carers and activities coordinators with groups of older people, in care homes, hospital settings or day care groups.
The Gardening kit has been rigorously trialled in NHS wards care homes and with community groups, including an evaluation project with researchers from the Dementia and Social Gerontology Research Group, University of Stirling with very positive results. You can find the results of the research here.
The kit has been carefully designed to be as accessible and supportive as possible for caregivers or inexperienced working with creative activities. Equally you may be experienced but looking for new ideas to engage with the people you care for.
With the Gardening kit you will find many ways to give creative opportunities to the people you care for - increasing their self-expression and routes to describing themselves through visual art, writing, reminiscence conversations, practical activities.
